BUHARI'S VISIT TO AMERICA AND THE IMPERATIVES OF THE LEAHY LAW

BUHARI'S VISIT TO AMERICA AND THE IMPERATIVES OF THE LEAHY LAW.
Apart from a seemingly warm welcome given to the Nigerian President in America by his host,President Obama,by lodging and hosting President Buhari in the historic Blair House, making him,Buhari the first Nigerian President to set foot on the historic building (The Blair House is an ancient building in Washington D.C used by American Presidents to welcome top-notch world leaders),the visit in my own estimation was a total flop as the key purposes behind the mission could not be accomplished. The key issues of insurgency (Boko Haram) and corruption dominated the discussion. However,it should be noted that the United States declined the request of Nigeria on the fight against Boko H'aram, citing Leahy Law as her constraint.
The ultimate question now becomes,"what then is this Leahy Law all about and why is it a major barrier or constraint towards gaining arms supply to fight insurgents in the North-east part of the country?" All these and more we are going to know shortly, follow me!
The Leahy Law or Leahy amendment according to Wikipedia  is a U.S. human rights law that prohibits the U.S. Department of State and Department of Defense from providing military assistance to foreign military units that violate human rights with impunity. It is named after its principal sponsor, Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont.
According to America,Nigerian military personnels violated the said Law in their fight against insurgents. And then i ask,if the military personnels in one way or the other violated the rights of the merciless insurgents who continuously have been responsible for the massacre and pogrom of Nigerians in the North-east part of the country, what will the U.S do to the insurgents  to equate their refusal to support Nigeria to fight these heinous rebels ? Why does America still make weapon supplies to countries like Egypt,Saudi Arabia,Israel and etc even when there are glaring human right abuses in their fights to maintain their national and territorial integrity?
The truth is,America could overturn if they wanted the portion of the Leahy Law that prohibits arms transaction with countries that violate human rights with impunity. If they could do so with the countries mentioned above, they could do the same with Nigeria. The truth remains that both countries,Nigeria and America had something on the negotiation table. Nigeria had the issue of Boko H'aram on the table and America had the issue of Gay Rights on the table too.Like my friend Dr.Douglass Dexterous would say,"there has to be the spirit symbiosis", where the parties involved will stand to benefit mutually or where the principle of quid pro quo plays .Nigeria declined the American Gay rights idea on the table and America in turn declined the idea of the supplies of armoury for Nigeria  to combat insurgency.

From the foregoing, one can easily infer that,it was not Leahy Law,it was the Gay Rights rejection by our Nigerian President Buhari when he said,"Sodomy is against the Nigerian Law" and breaks the deal.
Long live the Nigerian President for his ability to stand for what is right despite the glaring consequences of not playing the American tune.
Sai Buhari!
